Rahul Sharma

Rahul Sharma is the prodigious son and disciple of legendary santoor maestro Pandit Shivkumar Sharma (who is credited with transcending the santoor to full acceptance within the classical solo field and popularising it worldwide). Belonging to a family steeped in the tradition of Kashmiri music, Rahul has naturally acquired the inner calm and deep understanding of the Indian classical music tradition, whilst adding new dimensions with his creativity. From the gradual unfolding of a raga to the soul-stirring rendition of an emotional folk melody, Rahul plays all with great virtuosity.

'Music Of The Himalayas' was recorded live on 13 September 2000 during Rahul's performance at the Festival Settembre Musica in Turin, Italy. The music consists of four pieces:

1. Maqam-E-Navaa - based on traditional Kashmiri Sufi Music known as Sufyana Qalam. The first piece is without tempo followed by a composition in Dhai Taal, a rhythmic cycle of 14 beats specially used in Kashmiri Sufi Music.

2. A folk melody from the Kashmir valley, expressing joy in human emotions and the beauty of the valley.

3. A folk melody from the Jammu region, expressing the romantic conversations of lovers.

4. A new expression of Himalayan melodies in the contemporary context. This piece is played in two parts: the first part is influenced by light classical music in an 8-beat rhythmic cycle called Kehrwa Taal; the second part is influenced by classical instrumental music and the composition is in Teen Taal, a 16-beat rhythmic cycle.
