Mekong Delta Blues

Master Kong Nay & Ouch Savy

Master of the "Mekong Delta Blues", some call Kong Nay the "Ray Charles of Cambodia" - a charismatic blind musician whose trademark dark glasses and pock marked smile are known all over Cambodia. Nay is renowned in Cambodia as one of the great master artists to survive the genocide of Pol Pot, during which up to 90% fo artists perished in a purge intended to destroy a 2000 year old culture. But it turned out the culture - and Nay - are irrepressible

This recording of Kong Nay and Savy was mostly made at Studio CLA - a non profit sound studio operated by Cambodian Living Arts (CLA), which is committed to preserving traditional Khmer performing arts.

On this recording Nay appears with his gifted protege - Ouch Savy - one of the first women to learn the chapei. Only 21 years old, she comes from a renowned musical family and was discovered at 16 by Kong Nay and Cambodian Living Arts.
