Faso Denou
Farafina
The musicians, singers and dancers of Farafina are from Burkina Faso, West Africa. The group was formed in 1978 by Mahma Konate, who is considered to be one of Africa's finest balafon players.
The balafon, ancestor of the xylophone, is a percussion instrument made from wooden slats over calabash resonators whose music carries both rhythm and melody. A range of drums provide power and depth while flute, bass horn and traditional one-stringed violin bring subtlety and harmony.
The music, inspired by tradition and legends, is sensual and densely rhythmic. Fused inextricably with the music, the dance shifts from wild leaps to a delicate, gingerly tread, as though in slow motion. Led by Paco Ye, the intensity and originality of their expression is breathtaking.
Mahma Konate left the group in 1991.
